Finishing a first draft is exciting! The characters are alive, the world is taking shape, and the story finally exists beyond your imagination. But whether you've written every word yourself or collaborated with AI, one important task remains: revision.
The trouble is that editing everything simultaneously can become overwhelming. That's where the Revision Ladder comes in. Instead of tackling every problem at once, we climb through three focused passes, each strengthening a different part of the manuscript.
First Rung: Get the Story Right
Before polishing individual sentences, examine the story itself.
Does the plot make sense? Are character motivations consistent? Do events follow logically, or have important details mysteriously disappeared?
AI-assisted drafts can occasionally introduce contradictions, particularly across longer stories. A character might remember something they never experienced, or an important subplot might simply vanish.
This first pass is about identifying those problems and strengthening the narrative's foundation.
Imagine renovating a house. There's little point choosing wallpaper when the walls themselves need repairing!
Second Rung: Give the Story Its Voice
With the structure established, we can turn our attention to the storytelling.
AI can generate beautiful descriptions, but sometimes those descriptions feel generic. Dialogue may sound too polished, characters might share suspiciously similar personalities, or emotional moments may pass without making much impact.
Read through your manuscript with those concerns in mind.
Does each character sound distinct? Does the narration match the atmosphere you're trying to create? Are important moments given enough room to breathe?
Consider a frightened character entering an abandoned castle. Describing creaking doors and flickering shadows establishes the setting, but showing how that particular character reacts makes the scene memorable.
This is where your creative direction transforms competent writing into something personal.
